Machine Learning for Everyone: Empowering the Force with AI/ML (2021–2025)

Abstract:

The “Machine Learning for Everyone” initiative was developed to address the Army’s growing need for AI and ML literacy. What began as a single effort to unpack AI/ML concepts has grown into a transformative program, reaching over 3,000 participants (including 2,000 Army participants from 173 Army organizations). Designed to make AI/ML accessible to Soldiers and civilians, the course’s core philosophy was to turn the AI “black box” into a “glass box,” using Excel-based demonstrations to teach the fundamental concepts without sacrificing technical depth. Over 5 years, the initiative evolved from small workshops into large-scale virtual events and has since spun off into specialized courses, including the “AI for Soldiers” strategic broadening seminar. This report details the design, evolution, and measurable impact of this initiative, and serves as a case study in using a creative, bottom-up approach to build a data-centric workforce in support of the Army’s digital transformation.
