Intra-host IP Networking in Support of Simulation

Abstract:

This report details a method of emulating an entire Extendable Mobile Ad-hoc Network Emulator (EMANE) network on a single host operating system. The solution uses a novel IP addressing scheme, network address translation, and Linux kernel routing rules to bounce packets between a single host’s network interfaces as if they were traversing an actual network. The system was designed to enable the integration of a numerical simulation with military communications, and the implementation details illustrate low-level Linux routing techniques.
