Abstract:The U.S. Army is increasingly focused on diversifying its energy sources to enhance operational flexibility and resiliency. Fuels, such as hydrogen, methanol, ethanol, and ammonia, offer promising solutions for distributed operations that cannot rely only on bulk logistic fuel resupply. However, storing these fuels poses significant technical challenges due to their unique properties and handling requirements. This report provides regulations, guidelines, and best practices for storing emerging fuels for distributed operations, enabling the Army to safely and efficiently store and transport these fuels in various operational environments. By addressing the storage challenges associated with emerging fuels, this project will help the Army accelerate the adoption of these fuels, which is critical for the Army’s success in future operating environments.
