Abstract:

A proposed scenario is described for development of an autonomous force-on-force capability. In this scenario, Soldiers and robotic systems act as a team and perform the tasks of reconnaissance and screening. This scenario is the basis for further simulation and experimental research to be performed by ARL. This report emphasizes many of the challenges and capabilities that need to be developed for effective Soldier–robot teaming for a mission in such a scenario. The scenario depicts a much-scaled-down version of a typical cavalry unit mission of reconnaissance and screening. Key benefits identified for the use of robotic and autonomous system (RAS) include risk mitigation, enhanced situational awareness, improved operational tempo, accelerated command and control, and increased lethality and precision. Areas identified for further research and development include improving Soldier–robot trust, communication, shared understanding, and Soldier cognitive load. A structured three-phase approach is introduced for implementation of RAS into the mission scenario that includes details of the pre-mission preparation, mission execution, and post-mission activities to assist with further refinement of tactics, techniques, and procedures along with RAS technology.
