Oriented Morphologies in 2D Polymer Films

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks, also called two-dimensional polymers (2DPs), are of interest for several reasons, including theoretical strength, very high porosity, and high degree of anisotropy. In this work, 2DPs were synthesized from 1,3,6,8-tetrakis(4 aminophenyl)pyrene (TAPPy) and terephthalaldehyde (PDA), and then cast onto oriented substrates to test the ability of the substrate to induce macroscopic orientation in the resulting 2DP films. Using wide-angle X-ray scattering, it was shown that the 2DP molecules possessed a high degree of orientation within the films. The degree of orientation, size, and shape of the 2DP stacks and effects of chemical functionality (imine vs. amide) were analyzed.
