Abstract:This technical report explores the potential of near-eutectic aluminum–cerium–nickel–magnesium (Al-Ce-Ni-Mg) alloys as a new class of cast aluminum alloys. Thirteen unique compositions were investigated via microscopy and hardness measurements to determine an alloy composition for scaled-up evaluation. A simple hardness model was applied to the alloy system to determine the relative strengthening contributions of different phases as part of the down-selection criteria. An Al-8.41Ce-2.15Ni-4Mg wedge casting showed good strength retention as a function of solidification rate and is suggested as a candidate for further research efforts.
