Abstract:The objective of this work is the investigation of optimization-driven inverse-design techniques for pixelated metasurfaces and demonstration of their application to backscattering and beam steering of reflected RF signals. First, we developed an automated simulation framework to generate and evaluate pixelated unit cells. We then used this framework with a binary genetic algorithm to design unit cells for backscattering reduction. Finally, we extended the framework to beam-forming reflectarrays by generating a large database of pixelated unit cells organized into quantized phase states.
