Artificial Intelligence for Soldiers 2024: Experiences and Lessons Learned from the Inaugural Course

Abstract:

This final report highlights the work associated with the US Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Army Research Laboratory course, “Artificial Intelligence for Soldiers,” held April 8–19, 2024. The report details the development of the course, its content, the inaugural participants, and the feedback received. The course aimed to enhance Soldiers’ understanding of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) concepts, covering topics such as AI fundamentals, ML algorithms, neural networks, robotics, and human–machine integration. Participants, mostly mid-career officers and noncommissioned officers, reported significant improvements in their AI knowledge and confidence. The course effectively balanced theoretical foundations with practical demonstrations, earning high ratings from participants. Key suggestions for future iterations include targeting the right audience, providing pre-course materials, and expanding course content. The report concludes with a summary of feedback from the course and recommendations for future improvements. The significance of the course lies in its role in democratizing AI knowledge across the Army, preparing and educating the Army of the future to ensure strategic and operational advantages in upcoming military applications.
