Abstract:Applications of miniaturized test methods are rapidly growing in the field of high-throughput materials discovery. When using small-scale test specimens, care must be taken to account for how specimen size affects the measured mechanical response. Here, the macroscale and mesoscale responses of a nominal HP 9-4-30 high-strength steel alloy are directly compared. The tensile behavior was qualitatively similar regardless of specimen size. However, measurable differences in strength and ductility were observed. These differences are attributed to extrinsic effects of the sample fabrication process and sample geometry. Recommendations to alleviate each of these effects are proposed.
