Framework for Assessing Autonomy Research

Abstract:

This report provides a framework for assessing the value of low technology readiness level autonomy research and examples illustrating the framework. After defining autonomy as a type of system function, we propose that system behaviors implementing such functions can best be assessed by evaluating the performance, robustness, and adaptability of the behavior at a task with military relevance.
