Failure Analysis of High-Pressure Fuel Pumps Operated with Two Jet Fuels

Abstract:High-pressure fuel pumps (HPFPs) are an integral component in modern diesel engine systems. The durability of the HPFPs is highly dependent on the lubricity of the fuel being used. We examined five HPFPs operated with two jet fuels to determine the effect of fuel on component wear. Each subcomponent was analyzed for the type, location, topography, and composition of the worn surfaces. Pumps operated with fuel 1 exhibited a discoloration due to the formation of a thin surface film. Pumps operated with fuel 2 had several abrasive scratches and scuffing, which resulted in failure of the component.
