Abstract:The goal of this research was to better understand the implications of squad energy and power requirements/capabilities as they pertain to mission and atmospheric dependencies. The approach combined mathematical models of energy and power with relevant US Army events. The results found that including tactical resupply events with a conformable wearable photovoltaic (PV) array and a more unified conformable wearable battery reduced the unnecessary weight requirements imposed on the Soldier. As a consequence, the results imply that this enhancement can improve squad performance (mobility) and minimize Soldier cognitive burden while ensuring sufficient energy reserves. In the future, we plan to use the load requirements in combination with a power grid testbed to determine what PV requirements are needed to charge the nonstandard communication equipment batteries.
