Abstract:The use of electrification to increase the velocity enhancement of aluminum projectiles during dynamic tensile extrusion is explored. Experiments were performed in both electrified and unelectrified configurations with impact velocities between 475 and 575 m/s. Photon Doppler velocimetry was used to determine velocities, and X-ray radiography and optical shadowgraphy were used for imaging. Specimen breakup times are discussed and the percentage increases in velocity for the lead particles are presented.
