Evaluation of Near-Eutectic Al–Mg–Zn Alloys

Abstract:

Near eutectic ternary Al–Mg–Zn alloys were cast and evaluated for their mechanical and thermal properties. The results revealed extremely high hardness for these alloys in comparison to traditional Al-based cast alloys due to a high volume fraction of the divorced eutectic τ-Mg₃₂(Al,Zn)₄₉ phase. However, negligible room temperature ductility was discovered for all alloys, which limits the prospects of these alloys for industrialization.
