Abstract:

Al–Ce–Mg–Zn based hypoeutectic alloys were investigated for their efficacy in coarsening resistant high temperature applications. Nine unique compositions were investigated via various heat treatments and casting methods including button melting (25 g), small rod casting (300 g), and wedge casting (1150 g) to evaluate the mechanical properties and coarsening resistance. Results showed a large hardening response owing to precipitation of the τ-Mg32(Al,Zn)49 phase but rapid overaging was observed above 200 °C. Furthermore, the τ-Mg32(Al,Zn)49 phase did not show coarsening resistance at temperature above 200 °C as desired. As such, industrialization is suggested for applications below 100 °C.
