Abstract:In recent decades, technological advancements in robotics and automation have revolutionized military operations, offering novel capabilities and strategic advantages. The current rise of limbed robotic capabilities, including wheeled, tracked, and aerial robots with manipulators, quadrupedal robots, and humanoid systems, among other form factors, promises to further evolve the nature of military operations. This report begins by describing the capabilities of current commercially available and fielded limbed robots. It then describes a set of missions where future limbed robots could potentially add value through increased capability. Finally, it indicates many technical, operational, and logistical challenges preventing currently available robots from delivering the full set of desired capabilities today. The aim is to provide a foundation for future research and development in limbed robotic systems for the Army.
